A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” declared the national leader.
The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an rapid rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant concerns over operational security.

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
