Lando Norris edged out fellow driver and title rival Oscar Piastri for the quickest lap in the closing stages of the practice session at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Norris, who took the title advantage from Piastri by just one point after taking the win in Mexico City two weeks ago, topped the Melbourne-born driver by 0.023 seconds.

Earlier in the session, Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver during the running before the sprint shootout set to begin at 18:30 GMT.

The Red Bull star, the other racer in the points battle, trailing with a 36-point deficit behind Norris, ended up in P17 as his Red Bull team opted for a alternative strategy.

His teammate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to crash, though minor, when he spun at corner four early in the session.

Tsunoda slid over the track edges before rotating through the run-off area, and was lucky to get away with just a slight brush of the wall.

Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also had a spin, at the conclusion of the practice, spinning around through the high-speed corner leading to the final bend on to the start-finish straight.

The seven-time champion wrapped up in P19, trailing teammate the Monegasque driver.

Norris and Piastri were significantly quicker of the rest of the field, with Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber third fastest, 0.619 seconds behind the Australian's time.

Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was in fourth, with Sauber's Bortoleto fifth from Mercedes' Russell and the Alpine of Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
